EFFECTIVELY TREATING SEVERE ACNE
by
Sandra Surbrugg M.D.

When severe cystic acne fails to respond to other treatments, the dermatologist is likely to turn to isotretinoin. This synthetic oral form of vitamin A works by decreasing formation of oily plugs of sebum (the oil substance produced by sebaceous glands), reducing the formation of keratin (the tough outer layer of skin), and by shrinking the sebaceous glands. Isotretinoin cures or greatly reduces severe disfiguring acne in up to 80% of patients. The course of treatment usually runs four or five months, after which the condition may continue to improve at least two more months to a year. Sebum production then gradually returns to its pretreatment levels, but fewer than one-third of patients require a second course of the drug.

Dermatologists have so many new options for treating skin disorders today, that if you have problem skin, you may be missing out on the dramatic improvements that we can now achieve with new medications available only by prescription. While over the counter preparations might be fine for an occasional pimple, cystic acne may cause permanent scarring. It should be treated promptly and professionally. For additional information on today's topic, phone the CHEYENNE SKIN CLINIC at 635-0226. We are conveniently located at 123 Western Hills Boulevard. New patients are welcome.

P.S.Because isotretinoin can cause severe birth defects, female patients must avoid pregnancy by using an effective form of birth control or being totally abstinent during the treatment course and for one month afterwards.
